What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root Canal Treatment (known as “Endodontic Treatment”) involves the treatment of disease or injury to the dental pulp or ‘nerve in tooth’. The pulp is located in the core of the tooth in a small and narrow canal space extending from crown to tip of the root. The need for a root canal treatment arises when the pulp (nerve in the tooth) becomes infected or inflamed due to various reasons, such as deep tooth decay, a cracked or fractured tooth, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or trauma to the tooth. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding tissues and lead to sensitivity, tooth ache, abscess formation or the loss of the tooth. It can also lead to discoloring of the tooth.
RCT involves the following step:-
- An initial examination: The dentist examines the tooth and may perform X-rays to assess the extent of damage or infection.
- Local anesthesia: The area around the affected tooth is numbed using a local anesthetic to ensure a pain-free procedure.
- Pulp removal: Using specialized dental instruments, the dentist carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp from the pulp chamber and the root canals.
- Cleaning and shaping: The dentist cleans and shapes the root canals using files and irrigation solutions to remove any remaining debris, bacteria, and infected tissue.
- Permanent restoration: Filling followed by a crown is placed to protect the tooth and restore its function.
Why need crown after root canal?
A crown is often needed after a root canal treatment to provide additional strength, protection, and support to the tooth. Here are the main reasons why a crown may be recommended:
- Structural integrity: During a root canal, the infected or damaged pulp inside the tooth is removed, which can weaken the tooth structure. Placing a crown helps to reinforce and restore the tooth's strength, preventing it from breaking or fracturing.
- Tooth protection: A tooth that has undergone a root canal is more susceptible to damage, as it may become brittle over time. A crown acts as a protective cover, shielding the tooth from excessive wear, fracture, or further decay.
- Aesthetic restoration: In some cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment may appear discolored or have an uneven shape compared to the surrounding teeth. Placing a crown can improve the tooth's appearance, creating a natural and uniform smile.
Long-term success: A crown provides long-term stability and durability to the tooth. It helps to ensure the success of the root canal treatment by protecting the underlying tooth structure and reducing the risk of reinfection.
What does Root Canal Treatment involve?
Root canal treatment saves teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. It involves removing the damaged or read nerve tissue and the root canals of teeth that have become infected. The infected or dead tissue is cleaned away and the residual canal space is also cleaned and disinfected, and the root canal is prepared so that it can be sealed with a filling. The tooth can then be restored and can remain in function for many years provided there is sufficient sound tooth structure to support a new filling or crown.
If you need an endodontic re-treatment, it means that the previous root canal treatment failed or that symptoms persist. This may happen shortly after the original treatment or even years later. Endodontic re-treatment involves the removal of existing root filling material, re-cleaning and disinfecting the root canals and placing a new root filling.
In some cases root treatment or re-treatment cannot be performed in one visit, but more visits may be necessary in complicated cases or where there is more severe infection.
Finally, if endodontic treatment or re-treatment cannot be successfully carried out on a particular tooth, or if the tooth is too structurally compromised to be successfully or predictably restored, then it may be better to remove the tooth and restore it with a dental implant and crown.
At UCC Dental, we have the technology to help us carrying out our Root Canal Treatments using latest rotary systems. We use the latest rotary endodontic system along with high power magnification and led lighting for optimum visual access and maximum success rates.
